my final collection

Immature couture

‘If you carry your childhood with you, you never become older’ is a quote from Tom Stoppard that defines my collection. Adolescence is a time to play, a time to have fun and a time to be your true self. As we grow up, we begin to lose this. Adulthood is associated with maturity; there is no time to play, no time to have fun and we forget who our true selves really are.

My collection shows that when you enter adulthood you do not have to lose childlike immaturity, you can still be silly, lively and dippy.

Childhood is about making mistakes and learning from them and yet as soon as we become adults we are expected to be perfect and we make ourselves depressed trying to be that. Immature Couture explores the notion that when adults try to be perfect we become boring. It is human to make mistakes, and is human to have fun whilst doing so, it is human to be silly, it is human to laugh until you cry at things no one else will understand and it is human to be immature.

This message can be seen through my clashing chaotic prints, textural embellishments and fun garments for example a bunny eared coat which will encompass the wearer with happiness and a pair of dungarees which feature a rainbow bib pocket as well as 2 dresses and a top and trouser 2 piece that are full of textures prints and life.

A personal touch has been added to this collection with the illustrative motifs being inspired by the happiest time of my life: my childhood and the characters that made me so happy such as Trolls, Dolls, My Little Ponies and teddy bears, I also created my own characters to [show imagination.] As well as these characters my textiles have used baby textural touch and feel books for inspiration towards a collection that makes you want to touch everything; for instance the soft blue and pink fur of the bunny ear jacket and the pinafore dress, the woven threads of the zip-top and the cuffs of the trousers that are paired with it, and the vinyl sugar sprinkle dungarees. The print methods are endless, they range from embroidery to vinyl to digital print to screen print, I added unexpected details such as hearts in the glow in the dark vinyl dungarees, beads hidden in the threads, 2 tone zips, glitter slot seams, laser cut bears, this mirrors the small detailed that you remember from your child that no one would expect.

Bright, eye-catching colours makes this collection stand out, the colour palette is inspired by the characters of My Little Pony, for this palette I have chosen the new and updated version of My little Pony as it represents the modernisation of childhood favourites. Pinkie Pie- Pink; Applejack – Orange; Rainbow Dash – Blue/ rainbow; fluttershy – Yellow/ Pink; Twilight Sparkle – Purple; Rarity – Silver; Spike – Green.
